Using the Notice Board

Submitting a Message to the Notice Board

If you have a message or an event you’d like to see on the Notice Board, we invite you to e-mail your submissions to . Please send the message text as you wish it to appear, in the body of the email, with as little formatting as possible.

Some people have asked if their e-mails automatically appear on the notice board. The answer is no. All submissions are first read by a parent volunteer and then posted only if they are directly relevant to Fern Avenue Public School or the Toronto District School Board.

Subscribing to the Notice Board

Instead of repeatedly visiting the Notice Board to see if there are any posts you haven't read, you might consider subscribing to the RSS feed we've set up to notify our readers whenever we post something new.

RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication, is a series standard formats recognized by many web browsers, desk-top news readers, and web-based news aggregators that you can set up to gather items from a number of sources on the Internet. A typical RSS reader regularly checks the feeds you've subscribed to for new postings, downloads any updates it finds, and provides you with a way to monitor and read the news items.

The instructions for setting up your RSS feeds vary depending on how you choose to use them.

For desk-top readers, you will likely need to input the feed's address, which you can retrieve by clicking the Subscribe icon at the bottom of the right column on main message board. Many web browsers, including FireFox and Apple's Safari, already have this functionality built-in and can automatically recognize the feed. Read through your Help files for more information.

For online readers, click the Subscribe icon at the bottom of the right column on main message board to add our feed to your choice from a list of the most popular web-based aggregators.

We can't possibly provide the instructions for every possible system, but if you're having problems, you might find the following links helpful:

Getting the Most Out of the School Calendar

We use Google's free Calendar application to display our lunch menu and to keep track of school events and holidays.
  • To view the details of any event on the calendar, just click the entry.
  • To open a full-size version of the calendar, right-click on the calendar and open the frame in a new window. There's also a text link below the calendar frame that does this for you automatically.
  • If you're really adventurous, you can create your own, free Google Calendar account and add any or all of our calendars to your online calendar or even to certain desktop calendars, like iCal on the Macintosh.
