POOL INFORMATION

We understand that there are concerns regarding the frequent closing of the pool. We must close the pool when it is not up to health standards. The pool filters and plumbing (pipes) are in need of repair and we are doing everything we can to keep the pool open. TDSB plumbers have checked the system and cannot give us any short term solution except intermittent closure. Please understand that the filters and plumbing are an on-going issue and the cost to repair and replace them is cost prohibitive. Therefore thank you for your understanding as we continue to do our best to maintain the pool.

Event: Story Staircases, the art of telling tales

Story Staircases is a breathtaking art piece found on five stairwells at Queen Victoria Public School. 190 grades 3 and 4 students have transformed these stairwell walls into vivid allegorical paintings reflecting fables and mythology that express universal values of love and friendship, loyalty, trust, compassion and integrity. The 100+ feet of winding and climbing art introduces us to brilliant leopards, spiders, snakes, frogs, turtles, rabbits, woodpeckers, deer, monkeys, swans, roosters, hoopoe birds and humans too-all interacting with each other and with their natural world. These are the children's visual interpretations of the many stories told to the students: Jataka tales from South Asia, narratives from Africa and Europe, from Jewish and First Nations traditions. The project took six weeks to complete and involved many collaborators – including arts education partners Inner City Angels, Mariposa In The Schools, Ontario Trillium Foundation (funder) and education partner Yo

Parental Involvement in School Organization

Experience at schools where parents have been involved with the planning of program models strongly suggests that an inclusive and co-operative culture among administration, teachers and parents is achieved. Parents who understand the constraints under which the school staffing committee must operate and how difficult it is to create the models are more supportive and less critical of the final result. To that end it is recommended that the T.D.S.B. work toward this collaborative culture. For the 2008/09 staffing year, Principals are asked to work toward ensuring that a parent group of at least two parents, identified by the School Advisory Council, have the opportunity to (a) review and understand the staff allocation numbers and projected enrolment for the school (b) develop possible program organization models Principals are asked to ensure that any such staffing models are considered by the school staffing committee in their deliberations. Help wanted for composting and recycling initiative

The school year has begun and the cafeteria is in full swing. The Eco School team has started off our 2008-2009 ENVIRONMENT-CONSCIOUS year by spending lunch times with the children, composting and recycling their lunch leftovers. This is a great way to teach the children about recycling. We need more green compost bins, cords to tie up the bins (to rodent-proof them) and then a team of volunteers to take them home to have them emptied on wednesday mornings. Anyone interested in helping with this hands-on committee, email Joanne Somers (Isabelle and Ben's mom) at joannesomers@rogers.com . We are also planning a garden clean-up for next week. It will be one evening from 4-7 pm; stay tuned for details.

Letter to kindergarten parents

We would like to inform you of an exciting opportunity that has presented itself for us here at Ferncliff Daycare and the Fern School community. We have the potential to expand our childcare program and open a new Kindergarten Room. The TDSB has agreed to let us share a space with the Kindergarten in Room 109. This would allow us to operate a Preschool Room, a Junior Kindergarten Room and a Senior Kindergarten Room. In order for the daycare to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity, we need to be able to fill the spaces. If you are looking for childcare and are in need of a space, please fill out a wait list registration form that you can get at the daycare office, Room 103, located down the hall from the school office. It is our goal to determine the feasibility of this expansion as soon as possible and have the program up and running by no later than October 1, 2008. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Tracy Spence, Childcare Supervisor, at 416-588-1463 or

Get involved in Fern School Council

School councils are an excellent way for parents/guardians to get involved in their child’s education. Every Toronto District School Board (TDSB) school has an elected school council. The school council is made up of an elected committee of parents, staff and student representatives, appointed community members, the principal, and a general membership which includes all parents/guardians of children attending the school. The school council advises the principal and the TDSB on a variety of issues and activities relating to student achievement, curriculum goals and priorities, school budget priorities, school safety, renovation plans, after school activities, and criteria for selection of new principals. The council should: - focus on student learning and the best interests of all students, - provide a forum through which parents and other members of school communities can contribute to improving student achievement and school performance, - make recommendations to the school

Volunteers needed – get involved

Your school community needs you! Can you spare an hour, a day, a month? Whatever the amount, your participation is most appreciated. There are many events and activities at Fern that will not happen without an active group of volunteers. Every year the Fern School Council sponsors and coordinates events that rely on the good will and generosity of the Fern community. This includes the school administration, teachers, the parents/guardians of Fern students, and the students themselves. Some events for the 2008/2009 year: * Rummage Sale * Dance-a-thon * Fun Fair * Auction * Magazine Drive This year, we are pleased to have Karen Mondok as the Volunteer Coordinator. She will be a great support for Fern activities that would benefit from participation from the Fern community. Any and all participation is welcome. This year's magazine drive is being launched on September 15 . Please save your magazine subscription renewals for our sale. If you are anxious to renew before the official campaign begins, you can support us today by shopping on-line! It’s easy . . . visit http://www.qsp.ca/ . The Fern group number is 9160. How about planning ahead and helping even more: Consider giving magazine subscriptions as gifts this year! Welcome message from school council

Dear parents, On behalf of the Fern School Council I want to welcome back returning parents and students to what I am sure will be another great year at Fern. Welcome also to all our new parents and students. As many of you may already be aware, Fern has been chosen by the TDSB as a new site for French immersion. We look forward to making the new program, teachers, students and parents an important part of the Fern community. The Council has set itself a number of objectives for 2008-2009, particularly the continued improvement of our e-communications system. We want to ensure that parents have better, more timely information. To this end we are making a commitment to send out notices - including agendas - at least one week prior to Council meetings. Please make a note on your calender (day planner, Blackberry, etc...) for our next Council meeting: Thursday Sept. 18 , 2008, 7:00 pm, Fern School auditorium. I encourage all interested parents to attend this important introductory meet

Pool campaign update

Some members of the Let's Make Waves team have been hard at work putting a full press package together, in anticipation of the last TDSB Board meeting before summer break - June 25th at 7:30 pm. We need your help RIGHT NOW! This Wednesday night, there is a motion before the Board from Josh Matlow and Chris Tonks for the following: 1. That the Board reconsider its decision of June 27, 2007, as follows: That if, by February 2008, the provincial government does not agree to fund Board unfunded pools either through operating or capital grants or through a specific education mill rate, that the process of decommissioning all school-based pools effective June 1, 2008 be implemented. 2. That the Minister of Education be requested to appoint a professional with aquatics/auditing experience to help the Board review its pools before a single pool is drained in order to have correct and complete data before making decisions affecting aquatic programs. Fern is a Gold Ecoschool!

Fern Avenue Ecoschool Committee proudly announces that we have once again achieved Gold Certification. This program formally recognizes our school's excellent environmental initiatives. Even though sadly we have lost the compost bins, we have managed to stay in the race with other initiatives: ''Shutdown" - the teachers are now shutting down their computers every night; and "Let the Sun In" - all classes turn off the lights when it is bright and sunny outside. Our level of electrical consumption has been markedly reduced and we can all be proud of our school community. Our continued recycling campaign is still going strong and we are looking at alternatives to the compost bins for the hot lunch program waste. Please contact Joanne Somers at (416) 530-1284 or email joannesomers@rogers.com if you are interested in joining our enthusiastic team.

French as a Second Language Advisory Committee News

1. FSL Policy Development Policies and procedures on aspects of FSL programs have developed at the Board over the years but there is no overall policy in place against which procedures can be developed and evaluated. The Gossling report of 2005 noted this and the Board responded by passing a motion for the development of an Extended and Immersion French policy "establishing a commitment to French-as-a-Second Language as a community-based program that supports French-language proficiency and bilingualism." System Superintendent Nadine Segal formed a policy review committee of staff to work on an initial draft. In May, the committee expanded to include trustees and FSLAC members. It will meet again in September and in the coming months, the policy will go to the FSLAC, to the Program and School Services Committee of the Board and then to the full Board. The FSLAC is proposing that the commitment be as stated in the Board motion but also include a commitment to research and inno

Follow-up to rummage sale

Community. It is one of the most amazing things about living in this neighbourhood and being part of Fern Ave. Public School. There are so many folks who contributed to the success of this past weekend's rummage sale/fundraiser at the school. I would like to start out with special thank-you to Jo Somers, Crystal Rasa, Mary Tremain and Nancy Marini, who were not only a pleasure to work with, but really helped bring the event together and make it a fun day. This year's fundraiser was truly a group effort, as well as a community event. Aside from raising over $3,000 which will go towards next year's programs, this event also allowed folks an opportunity to clean out their closets. Along the way we also helped out several charitable organizations, donated to an additional fundraiser for an orphanage overseas and made a new refugee family in the neighbourhood very happy. The parents, students, and administrators all gave an enormous amount of their time with respect to sorting,

Pool update

The latest media reports (as of today, April 16) indicate no progress has been made by the TDSB, City of Toronto and the Provincial government in saving the TDSB school pools slated for closure in 2008 and 2009 (including our pool here at Fern). Parents have been asking what else can be done to save the pool. A number of parents have made suggestions such as partnerships with outside organizations and a fundraising campaign. The issue of the pool will be on the agenda for our next meeting, Thursday, April 24, at 7:00 pm. Everyone interested in this issue is encouraged to come out and join us for a discussion. Dear Fern parents and Fern community, just a few quick updates: Cyber-Bullying: Thanks to the parents who came out for the info night on cyber-bullying. TDSB Closes 23 Pools in June 2008

TDSB Closes 23 Pools in June 2008 to Fund Other Priorities Toronto, ON, April 4, 2008 – Effective June 2008, the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) will be closing 23 school pools. Additional pools have been identified to close effective June 2009 (see attached list). The pools where the City runs community programs, as well as pools that are needed for Special Education programs, will remain open. The estimated cost savings of $4 million can be applied towards the Board’s budget shortfall or used to fund new investments such as the increased number of ESL teachers approved by the Board for 2008-09. The decommissioning of these pools is a result of a previous Board decision, made by Trustees, in June 2007, stating, “if, by February 1, 2008, the provincial government does not agree to fund Board unfunded pools either through operating or capital grants or through a specific education mill rate, that the process of decommissioning all school-based pools effective June 1, 2008 be implem

Safety Notice: Valuables

We would like to inform the Fern community that on April 3, we unfortunately had several students’ personal expensive items stolen from the girl’s change room. There is some security as the doors were locked but unfortunately incidents like this do occur. We do take this seriously and we have reported it to the police. To protect all students from loss, disappointment and heartache, we suggest that valuable items such as jewellery, money, expensive toys and electronics be left at home. We strongly recommend that students keep personal audio devises, such as Ipods, MP3 players and cell phones at home. Cell phones should be turned off in school and they should stay in your backpacks or lockers during the school day.
